Q & A with our WaveMaker of the Month – Scott Smith

June 14, 2019

We’re pleased to highlight our OceanFirst Bank colleagues who are making a difference with the Foundation’s nonprofit community partners – we call them the “WaveMakers” and they are extraordinary leaders and volunteers.

How long have you been a member of the OceanFirst Bank team?

I came to OceanFirst Bank through the Sun National Bank merger in early 2018.

Tell us about your favorite volunteer activities.

I most enjoy working at the Cathedral Kitchen, which is a soup kitchen in Camden.

What motivates you to stay involved and give back through volunteering?

I want to set a good example for my children.

What activities do you enjoy in your spare time?

I enjoy coaching my daughter’s soccer team.

What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?

My wife and 2 daughters keep me very busy.

What aspects of your work at you most passionate about?

The opportunity I get to meet new people and here their stories.

Who inspires you? Why?

My brother. He is a firefighter & paramedic.  The courage to put yourself in the most dire situations, to help others, amazes me.

What experience has been most impactful for you?

I recently took part in a mock interview workshop with some women who were re-entering the workforce. They were victims of domestic disturbance of some sort.  Their perseverance was inspirational.

What would be the ideal volunteer activity for you – and why?

It would be around feeding those who need it.  I can’t think of anything more basic, or more necessary, than feeding someone who is hungry.
