Meet OceanFirst’s WaveMaker of the Month – Desirae Dodd

November 1, 2021

We’re pleased to highlight our OceanFirst Bank colleagues who are making a difference with the Foundation’s nonprofit partners – we call them the “WaveMakers” and they’re extraordinary leaders and volunteers.

How long have you been a member of the OceanFirst Bank team?

I have been a member of OceanFirst Bank since 2018. I started out as the BSA Manager, then the Deputy BSA Officer. I am now the BSA Officer for the bank. I oversee the management of the BSA department and high-risk areas of the bank; including the BSA/Compliance Program, the Customer Identification Program, Customer and Enhanced Due Diligence and assisting in law enforcement in fighting financial crime.

I was acquired through the Sun National Bank acquisition which I worked for since 2007. My previous roles included Personal Banker, Consumer Loan Retention Specialist, Senior Enhanced Due Diligence Analyst, and Enhanced Due Diligence Supervisor.

What has been your favorite volunteer activity – and why?

My favorite volunteer activity is the Coats for kids in Millville NJ, at the NJ Motor Sports Park. Kids get to come in to pick a coat, scarf and gloves, then get to enjoy lunch with everyone. I love kids. The joy on their faces when they come in to pick their items is priceless. Socializing with the kids afterwards and learning about their individuality is exciting.

I also love volunteering in a Soup kitchen, whether it is time or donations. Being in the position to help those in need and provide support is very rewarding.

What has volunteering taught you?

Volunteering has taught me many things including socializing, learning new skills, connecting with the community; it is mentally stimulating.

I have made new friends, learned to file taxes, skills to team build, and put smiles on many faces. I love to get others involved including my colleagues, family and my own children.

If you wrote a book, what would you title it?

Stop Worrying and Start Living – many people live in fear and worry. Live your life everyday to the fullest.

Would you rather skydive or go bungee jumping? Why?

I would love to skydive. I love the rush and challenge of overcoming my fears. This would be very exciting.

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a mortician, however at that time, I had no knowledge of the embalming steps (which I was not interested in as a kid). I was interested in dressing up and beautifying the person for their last day visible to their family and friends.

Do you sing in the shower, the car, or both?

I sing both in the car and the shower. This question is hilarious. When I am in the moment, I feel like I sound like Celine Dion or Adele, but I am sure my family feels otherwise.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I am a morning person and a night owl. I get up really early and go to bed late whether it is a workday or not. I like my peace and quiet in the morning when everyone is still asleep. At night I like to relax to catch up on the news and social media.
