Meet OceanFirst’s WaveMaker of the Month – William WhelanSeptember 1, 2020
We’re pleased to highlight our OceanFirst Bank colleagues who are making a difference with the Foundation’s nonprofit partners – we call them the “WaveMakers” and they’re extraordinary leaders and volunteers.
How long have you been on the OceanFirst team?
I joined the team through the acquisition of Capital Bank 18 months ago.
“I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me” – Matthew 25:35-40.
What motivates you to stay involved and give back through volunteering?
My parents and grandparents did it, I enjoy it and encourage my children and grandchildren to do the same.
If you could have one song play every time you entered a room what would it be and why?
What a Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong
What aspects of your work are you most passionate about?
A friend once told me, we have a moral obligation to share our knowledge with people who can benefit from it. With my years serving in government, with non-profits, and as a long-time banker, sharing knowledge through discussion wins business and builds relationships. I love discussions with customers and prospects!
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
Anything by Creedence Clearwater Revival or James Taylor.
What’s been your favorite volunteer activity?
Working as a Code Blue volunteer, I found the homeless gave me more than I could ever give them. My first volunteer night, a few of us stayed all night Thanksgiving Eve. Before I could greet the 12 or 13 homeless at 6 AM they were coming to me wishing me a “Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks for a warm place to sleep”.
