Q & A with OceanFirst’s WaveMaker of the Month – Jill Flynn

October 4, 2019

We’re pleased to highlight our OceanFirst Bank colleagues who are making a difference with the Foundation’s nonprofit community partners – we call them the “WaveMakers” and they are extraordinary leaders and volunteers.

How long have you been a member of the OceanFirst team?

On Halloween, I will be celebrating 14 years at OceanFirst.

Tell us about your favorite volunteer activities.

I enjoy working at a local soup kitchen, but I enjoy any activity that brings happiness to others.

What motivates you to stay involved and give back through volunteering?

When you look at those that you’re helping and you can see the joy and appreciation, that’s motivation enough.

What activities do you enjoy in your spare time?

I love to read and stay active in a book club with friends. Summertime I enjoy spending at the beach… with a good book of course.

What do you do when you aren’t volunteering?

Spending my time with my family and friends is what makes me happy. Living at the Jersey Shore is such a great place with so much to do.  I try to take advantage of all that we have to offer.

What aspects of your work at you most passionate about?

My customers are my passion, and I want to always do what’s right for them. As a Branch Manager in a senior environment, many of my clients have little or no family nearby.  Keeping them and their assets safe is so important to me.

Who inspires you? Why ?

There’s no one person who inspires me. As an active Kiwanian, I have the privilege to listen to some great speakers each week who promote their non-profits and are in need of volunteers. Hearing stories of how these organizations help others is motivation to me.  I’m also very grateful to OceanFirst Bank for encouraging all their employees to get involved and give back.

What experience has been most impactful for you?

Giving food to those less fortunate at Thanksgiving time is at the top of the list.  I had a few people who were just so grateful that it brought tears to my eyes.  It’s a beautiful way for me to start off my holiday.

What would be the ideal volunteer activity for you – and why?

I can’t say that I have a favorite. I enjoy each activity that I’m able to take part in because I’ve been able to help someone.
